I held out for about 4 years until I finally changed up our less than 55 square foot bathroom and added a little bit of a personal touch to it. The idea of pineapples kept coming to mind but I didn’t want a traditional look. I wanted something more fun and playful and let’s face it, it’s hard getting up in the morning and going to work or getting ready for bed when you know you have to get some rest and really shouldn’t binge that episode of the show that just… keeps… bringing… the cliffhangers. UGH!
Back to what I was saying…FUN and playful, not stuffy and buttoned up was the look I was going for in our intimate en suite. Speaking of “ensuite,” as in it being of French origins, that had a hand in influencing this upgrade too. I do a lot of dreaming while being in my bathroom and one of those dreams is to one day visit Paris so there are subtle touches of French aesthetic in here too.
The process…
I started the process with finding a wallpaper I really, really loved. It took a month or two for me to find one that I was truly enamored with because I had a certain look I was going for and it needed to somewhat go with our bedroom which has navy and magenta with gray walls and white furniture (I might share pics of that room later). I finally found a wallpaper that seemed to check all of the boxes at Spoonflower. It was fun and had a Florida vibe with the palm trees and the pineapples in a grid pattern. The colorway was perfect and it was super cute! My husband had previously turned down a couple of other options so the next opinion I needed to get was his and he was a go on the wallpaper. Phew!
Next was colors. We wanted to paint the walls and possibly the vanity. We went to Lowe’s and I picked out 2 pinks and 2 blues, one light and one dark for each color that matched the wallpaper. I proposed to my husband that we paint the trim in order to add more color and to my surprise he was totally down for that. *insert shocked face here* Normally I would not paint trim other than white, but two thoughts went through my mind: 1. It’s a small space and we can make an impact if we paint the trim and 2. I really liked Gray Benko’s designs on Magnolia Network and wanted to give that a go in my own way in my house. I did have to “sell” my husband on the pink door though. As a matter of fact he made a deal with me that we get the whole bathroom done but leave the door to be the last thing so we can see, “how he feels.” And that is what we did. I painted the door about 2 weeks after the rest was completed. He just needed to see it all together.
Once we got the walls painted and the wallpaper up we were on the hunt for a mirror and new towel hooks. We found the perfect mirror and hooks during a Target run one Sunday. The mirror was on sale and the hooks weren’t what I originally had in mind but they were perfect for what we needed and matched the look that we were going for. We also needed a new light fixture because the original one was a nickel finish and as you can tell we were going for more of a gold or brass finish for the accessories. Enter Lowe’s again and we purchased a light fixture that was being discontinued. This isn’t always the best thing to do just in case an issue comes up with the product, but we decided to take a chance since we liked it so much. And far I’m happy to say it wasn’t a bad idea. Let’s hope we’re saying that a long time from now.
What didn’t we do…
One thing that we haven’t quite gotten to yet is changing the faucet to match the gold finish on the hooks, the mirror and the light fixture. We haven’t found the right one yet, but we will. Some other things we didn’t do, and we don’t plan to for awhile, is the tile in the shower and on the floor. This is something we can do down the road and it didn’t need to be done right away. I’m impatient but I try to be practical too. It’s not easy though. ;)
I love how it turned out and I’m grateful every time I walk in there because it feels more like us and it makes me happy that it all came together.
